Hutton Brickyards' Staff Guide to the Hudson Valley This Fall

No one knows the Hudson Valley quite like the people who work on its riverbank. Fall is when the region comes into its own, and it's also when our team's recommendations get most opinionated: which orchard is worth the drive, where to warm up after a hike, which market to clear a Saturday for. These are the places we send guests when they ask where we'd go.

Field + Supply Fall MRKT

OCTOBER 9th – 11th

To kick things off: Field + Supply's Fall MRKT, held right here at Hutton Brickyards, the weekend of October 9 to 11. More than 275 makers take over the riverfront with ceramics, textiles, furniture, and small-batch everything, set against old kilns and smokestacks no studio could fake. Live music, local eats, and maker demos round out the day. It's the kind of market where you come for one thing, leave with five, and somehow feel good about all of it.

Enroute from NYC

DRIVE THROUGH THE FALL FOLIAGE

Embrace the journey and take in the turning leaves along the way. Route 28 offers a breathtaking natural corridor, its autumnal canopy arching over the road in a tapestry of amber, crimson, and gold…consider it a preview of what's to come.

SLEEPY HOLLOW, NY: HISTORY, HAUNTINGS, & HARVEST MARKETS

Made famous by Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, this historic village practically invented fall. It sits just off the drive north from Manhattan, an easy first stop before you reach us. History buff, farmers market devotee, or Headless Horseman hopeful, Sleepy Hollow delivers. Book a lantern tour of Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, where Irving himself is buried, or just wander the village and let it find you.

GREIG FARM

There is no better fall activity than a pumpkin patch. Everyone knows it, no one argues it. Greig Farm takes the premise and runs: pick-your-own apples and pumpkins, pygmy goats roaming the property, a taproom pouring local brews when the basket's full, and no entry fee, hard as that is to believe. The on-site market and art shops round it out.

ROUGH DRAFT BAR & BOOKS

Books, coffee, and cocktails under one roof, Rough Draft Bar & Books is the kind of place that makes you want to cancel your afternoon plans and settle in as the leaves casqued outside. A Kingston staple that truly has it all for fall. Curl up with a literary find, a seasonal cocktail, a locally sourced pastry, or a counterculture cup of coffee. Or all four. No one's judging.

DOLCE

Tucked into Historic Downtown Kingston, Dolce is built for slow mornings. Sweet and savory crêpes, French toast, panini, and scratch-made baked goods anchor the menu, with espresso and whole-fruit smoothies to wash it down. Gluten-free and vegan crêpe options mean nobody's left out. The dining room is small and the hours are tight, opened Thursday through Sunday, 9 to 2, so plan accordingly and arrive ready to linger.

TERRAPIN

Voted both Best Farm-to-Table Restaurant and Best Bistro of the Hudson Valley, Terrapin is the rare spot that earns two titles at once. The room is a converted 1825 church, all soaring ceilings, stone, and candlelight, and the fall menu pulls straight from neighboring Migliorelli Farm, shifting week to week with what comes out of the ground. Walk into the casual, open-late Red Bistro for something relaxed, or book the dining room for a proper evening. Either way, the building does half the work.

HUDSON RIVER CRUISES: RIP VAN WINKLE II

Leaf season from the water: a 90-minute sightseeing cruise aboard the Rip Van Winkle II out of Rondout Landing, five minutes from Hutton, with the Catskills and Shawangunks turning color on both sides and historic lighthouses and riverfront mansions along the way. Open-air decks, a crew that knows the river's stories, and no trails, no elevation, no gear required. Build in time around it: the Rondout waterfront rewards a wander, and Rosie General is the stop for pastries and provisions. Hutton guests take 10% off with code Hutton2026.

WOODSTOCK FILM FESTIVAL

The Woodstock Film Festival returns October 14-18 for its 27th year of film in the Hudson Valley. The annual festival features five days of film screenings, Q&As, thought-provoking panels, and raise-the-roof parties. Spread across arts venues in the towns of Woodstock, Kingston, Rosendale, and Saugerties, the festival brings together up-and-coming filmmakers, acclaimed talent, seasonal visitors, and Hudson Valley locals.

LIVE MUSIC AT ASSEMBLY

Uptown Kingston's Assembly hosts acoustic sets and comedy shows throughout the fall season, with something on the calendar most weekends. The room has an ease to it that makes any night there feel unhurried. Mark September 18th specifically for Paper Dolls Midnight Ballet, a 21+ late night performance that stands apart from the regular programming and makes for a strong reason to plan around that particular weekend.

MQUAN CLAY SCHOOL

Clay doesn't care what season it is, but fall makes a studio feel especially right. Run out of ceramic artist Michele Quan's converted Saugerties service station, Clay School puts you elbow-deep in hand-building or at the wheel; sessions are unled and flexible, hand-builders can dive straight in, and first-timers on the wheel start with a quick intro class. Quan's own work, earthy and symbolic, both haute and handmade, sets the bar for what you'll walk away with. Make a piece in one session and the studio will fire it after you leave and ship it home.

Shopping

CLOVE & CREEK

A home goods boutique with an instinctive eye for cozy and considered, Clove and Creek turns dangerous come fall. Hand-thrown ceramics, locally poured candles, and well-chosen textiles shift quickly from want to need, and the whole shop has a way of making your living room feel incomplete by comparison, in the best possible way. Five minutes from Hutton, it's the essential stop for a Kingston keepsake, or just an excuse to browse.

LOVEFIELD VINTAGE

No better season than fall to unearth a worn leather jacket, an oversized flannel, or a vintage find you didn't know you were looking for. Lovefield Vintage deals in intention and personality, its collection curated piece by piece rather than racked by the pound. It's the kind of hidden gem locals don't volunteer freely. Consider yourself in the know.

37 N Front St, Kingston NY 12401. (845) 514-2720

NEWT

Charming, quirky, and entirely its own thing, Newt is the kind of eclectic gift shop that turns shopping into a curiosity expedition. Think of it as an autumnal treasure hunt where you'll arrive looking for a gift and leave with something entirely unexpected, for someone else or, more likely, yourself.
