A Four-Day, Three-Night Workshop with Jennifer Cohen Harper
Mindfulness with Horses: Cultivating Embodied Connection, Clarity, and Presence
An Equine Assisted Learning facilitator, mindfulness educator, and Omega Institute faculty member for fifteen years, Jennifer Cohen Harper has worked since 2018 with the herd at 13 Hands Equine Rescue.
There, horses recovering from neglect and the trauma of wild capture relearn trust through the same attunement and consent-based practice she teaches people. Her four-day retreat brings you into that herd of more than 100 equines, from mustangs and miniature horses to donkeys, mules, and even zebras.
The work stays on the ground, with no riding: connection built from body language, breath, and intention. The retreat opens and closes on the Hutton riverfront, with gentle movement, journaling, and conversation that turn the days with the herd into practices you keep. No horse experience needed; everyone is welcome.

Itinerary
-
Settle in at Hutton, meet the group, and get a first look at what’s ahead. Jennifer introduces mindfulness in the context of relationships with horses, shares the story of 13 Hands Equine Rescue and the animals you’ll meet, and walks through the guidelines that let everyone arrive at the farm prepared and confident.
3:00 - 5pm - Arrival
5:30 – 7pm – Dinner
7:30 – 9pm – Workshop
-
The first full day at the rescue is about taking in the place and meeting the herd. Grounding practices, herd observation, and first interactions open up a lesson in non-verbal communication, including how to read when a horse is ready for touch and when it would rather keep a little space. Everything stays low-pressure, and no experience is needed.
8:00 – 8:45am - Breakfast
9:30 – 12noon - At 13 Hands Equine Rescue, box lunch included
6:00 – 7:30pm - Dinner
-
Back at the rescue for more personal, unhurried time with the horses. The day may include small-group or one-on-one ground-based interactions and reflective exercises. The flow stays spacious and adaptive, following the herd’s energy and giving everyone room to move at their own pace.
8:00 – 8:45am - Breakfast
9:30 – 12noon - At 13 Hands Equine Rescue, box lunch included
6:00 – 7:30pm - Dinner
-
A final morning together on the Hutton riverfront. The group shares what stayed with them, then turns to the practical: guided reflection, discussion, and simple exercises for carrying the clarity and presence of the week into daily life.
8:00 – 8:45am - Breakfast
9:00– 11:00am - Workshop, box lunch for the road

Know Before You Go
-
Late July on the Hudson runs hot and humid, with cooler evenings by the river and the odd afternoon thunderstorm. Two days are spent at the farm, so pack clothes you don’t mind getting dusty.
Clothing: Breathable tops (a light long-sleeve layer helps with sun and bugs at the farm), lightweight long pants for barn days, shorts or a dress for downtime, a light sweater for evenings by the river, sleepwear, and a dinner outfit if you’re feeling fancy.
Footwear: Sturdy closed-toe shoes or boots for the farm. Add comfortable shoes or sandals for the riverfront and extra socks. (Cozy cabin slippers are provided in every room!)
Accessories: A wide-brim hat, sunglasses, a small bag for farm days, and a refillable water bottle. Leave dangling jewelry at the cabin when you head to the rescue.
Outdoor Gear: Phone charger, camera for the herd, a light rain jacket, and a notebook for journaling.
Personal Care: Sunscreen, SPF lip balm, toiletries, and hand sanitizer. Skip strong perfumes on farm days, since horses are sensitive to scent.
Health & Comfort: Any personal medications, allergy meds if hay or dust bother you, bug spray, and snacks between box lunches.

Kingston is just under two hours from New York City, making it an easy weekend escape. Hop in the car and take the scenic drive up the Hudson Valley via the NY State Thruway, or leave the driving to Amtrak—trains run regularly from Penn Station to the Rhinecliff or Kingston station, with the ride taking about 90 minutes to two hours. Either way, you'll trade city streets for river views in no time.
Address: 132 Lindsley Avenue. Kingston, NY 12401
-
Complimentary on-site parking is included with your stay.
On-site gem cart service is available to help transport your luggage from the parking area to your cabin. An electric vehicle charging station is also provided on the property.

Our cabins are dog-friendly, but for this program we strongly recommend leaving your dog at home. Monday and Tuesday are spent offsite at 13 Hands Equine Rescue, where pets aren’t permitted, and our pet policy requires that dogs left in a cabin be crated, which isn’t fair to them for a full day at the farm. We’d love to welcome your dog on a future stay.
Please note that Edgewood Mansion is a pet-free space, and dogs are not permitted inside actual program sessions at Hutton Brickyards.
The difference at Hutton Wellbeing is scale. At the big retreat centers you can be one of a hundred in the hall; here, programs are kept intentionally small, closer to a dinner party than a conference. You're never watching from the back row. Teachers share the same tables at meals, questions get answered by name, and the strangers from Friday's welcome dinner are usually the reason people come back.
The place does its part. Sessions meet in a century-old brick pavilion, meals are served with the river in view, and evenings end around the fire. In winter and spring the property runs at its quietest, which means a small group has the riverfront, the trails, and the saunas nearly to themselves.
